The House - A Brief Intro
How many members are there in the house? 435 Special powers given to the House: Impeach officials (presidents, judges, etc.) All revenue bills MUST start in the House $ $ $

The House - Elections Incumbents win overwhelmingly
Franking privilege, credit claiming Open seats are largest source of turnover Congressional districts are determined by state legislatures Can be redrawn based on census Gerrymandering - drawing boundaries that are favorable to a party in control of a state legislature

The House - 2 Important Committees
Ways and Means: Economic committee - taxation, tariffs, etc. Members that serve on this committee CANNOT serve on another Rules Committee: Determines the rules for bills - date, time for debates, etc. (Very important for bills) Closed rule - set time limits, no amendments allowed for bill Open rule - looser time limits, amendments are allowed

Speaker of the House Most powerful position in the House
Elected every 2 years (requires more than 50% of vote) Choses committee assignments 2nd in line for the Presidency!

Other Important Roles Majority Leader:
Schedules bills, gains support for votes Minority Leader: Similar to the majority leader of the oppositional party Whips: Carry messages to party members, count votes prior to being cast
