2. Why are quotations important?
Quotations are an integral part of analytic writing. In the point, proof, explanation method, quotations are the foundation of each proof

Many Arts disciplines in university will also use this Referencing Guide

4. In general, Quotations can never stand alone; you must introduce them
Always follow a quotation/paraphrased proof with the page number in parentheses/brackets (if you are using more than one author, indicate the authors’ last names as well)

5. METHOD ONE: Introduce quotations with a dialogue tag
A quotation can never stand alone
One way to introduce a quotation is with a dialogue tag
A dialogue tag is a group of two or more words which attributes speech to a particular speaker (i.e. he says, she whispered, the narrator states, etc.)

6. Technical Tips The dialogue tag should always be followed with a COMMA
The direct quotation should be in quotation marks
Following the quotation, you must include brackets with the page number—the period goes after the brackets

7. Other Reminders
If the quotation ends with a question mark or exclamation mark, keep this punctuation, but also put a period after the brackets
Quotations that are introduced with a dialogue tag should be less than four typed lines

8. Make sure you provide CONTEXT
For each quotation introduction it is important to provide some context
Context helps the reader understand who is speaking (narrator or character) and what is happening at that point in the reading

9. Examples:
In the story’s introduction, Zeus appears very powerful when the narrator states, “Zeus was the Greek god of the sky but also the supreme ruler of Mount Olympus, which included all of the Olympian gods as well as all of the earth” (18).

10. Hera demonstrates that her relationship with Zeus is in turmoil when she exclaims, “I can’t trust you!” (5).
While upset with Hades, his brother, Zeus says, “You are no longer welcome among the Olympians” (72).
