2 On the quiz Wednesday: Be able to tell me if you need to use Preterite or Imperfect for a specific translation AND WHY Translate sentences from English to Spanish and Spanish to English. (KNOW YOUR PRETERITE AND IMPERFECT CONJUGATIONS!) Translate sentences that use the Danger verbs (Verbos Peligrosos) -- know how these change in meaning in Preterite vs. Imperfect Vocab: Common vocab we’ve used all year, key words from your folders, Vocab 1

3 Preterite vs. Imperfect:
We went to the beach on Fridays. Imperfect (habitual past action) Nosotros íbamos a la playa los viernes. I always talked in class. Imperfect (repeated past action) Yo siempre hablaba en clase. It was raining. Imperfect (weather) Estaba lloviendo./Llovía. One time he broke his leg. Preterite (one time completed past action) Una vez él se rompió la pierna. (NOTE: Romperse is a reflexive verb and is what you use when talking about breaking a body part. ALSO note that you don’t use possessive adjectives with body parts.

4 Preterite vs. Imperfect:
On Tuesday we did not go to school. Preterite (one time event, completed past action) El martes nosotros no fuimos a la escuela. He was tall and handsome. Imperfect (description) Él era alto y guapo. You (s. inf.) studied at 9:00 PM. Preterite (one time event, specific time given for the beginning) Tú estudiaste a las nueve de la noche. It was 9:00 PM. Imperfect (telling time) Eran las nueve de la noche. (NOTE: With time in the past you will use “era” when followed by “la una” and “eran” when followed by any other number.)

While we were running he was talking. Both imperfect (simultaneous actions, ongoing actions) Mientras nosotros corríamos él hablaba. You all (formal) were talking when the teacher arrived. Imperfect: were talking (ongoing past action, interrupted action) Preterite: arrived (one time event, completed past action, interrupting action) Ustedes hablaban cuando el profesor llegó/vino. They went to the house, ate, and talked for 4 hours. All preterite (series of events, completed past actions, specified period of time) Ellos fueron a la casa, comieron y hablaron por cuatro horas.

6 Preterite vs. Imperfect: Danger verbs
They tried to study but failed. Ellos quisieron estudiar pero no pudieron. We didn’t want to go to the clinic. No queríamos ir a la clínica. I knew the teacher as a child. Yo conocía al profesor de niño/a. NOTE: Conocer (to know people, places) vs. Saber (to know facts/how to do something) -- if using conocer with people don’t forget your personal a! She found out the truth last week. Ella supo la verdad la semana pasada
