8 About Stages of Change We have to go through each stage of change if improvements are going to last. Forcing change or skipping stages usually leads to relapse. 2/5/2019

9 Five Stages of Change RESISTANCE: Can’t or won’t see problem.
2. THINKING: Aware of problem and consequences. Not ready to commit to change anytime in the next 6 months. PLANNING: Preparing for real changes within 30 days. ACTION: Actively changing behavior & surroundings. Lasts for first 6 months. 5. MAINTENANCE: New routines established for 6+ months. 2/5/2019

To begin making lasting change, we must: Identify the behavior that’s causing us problems, and (2) Figure out which stage of change we’re in. Complete the examples on page 7. 2/5/2019

21 Summary During this first class, we have read about three characters, focusing mostly on Damon. We have also taken a close look at five stages of change, and talked about strategies needed to move from one stage to the next in making positive changes in our lives. In our next class, we will take a closer look at the beliefs and attitudes which drive our behavior, and learn how these can sometimes backfire on us. 2/5/2019

22 KEY POINT #1 There is a natural tendency to resist change, even when change means improvement in our lives. It takes a strong person to start the process of self- improvement. 2/5/2019
