Why offshore wind in Ireland?
High wind speed & potential West coast: highest wind speeds in Europe, average 10.2 m/s, >9.5 m/s in many areas. Total offshore wind development = 34.8GW–39.5GW without likely significant adverse effects on the environment (SEAI 2014). No/little icing time: less challenge in turbine blades and floaters Near-shore floating wind sites (60–200m depth): 25GW – 27GWLow cost High full load hours (Oriel windfarm 44.3% with Siemens 6MW turbines. Floating offshore wind will exceed 50%.

The domestic picture All-Island Electricity Fuel Mix in 2016 (EirGrid): Electricity and Hydrogen from offshore wind offer potential replacements for some of 46.5% gas and 17.7% coal. Ireland committed to reducing CO2 by 80% in 2050 Urgent needs for both new & clean gas resources: Hydrogen from wind
