INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION

WHAT IS COMMUNICATION? from the Latin word ‘communis’, which means ‘similarity’ or ‘equality’ a process of sharing information, ideas and feelings.

COMMUNICATION: an active process and a changing event
two-way traffic and not one-way process

COMMUNICATION INVOLVES:
spoken or written words body language personal mannerism style physical environment

THE PURPOSES OF COMMUNICATION
persuasion improving relationship informing sharing discovering and uncovering information

ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION
1. Who – the sender 2. To whom – the receiver 3. What is said- the message 4. What channel – the mode 5. The effect – the feedback

FORMS OF COMMUNICATION
There are several forms of communication which are: speech written symbols gestures

TYPES OF COMMUNIATION

1. Intrapersonal communication
Involves internal thought or language, engage one person An active internal process of thought in processing messages Sender own feedback

Examples: Daydreaming Nocturnal dreaming Speaking aloud (to oneself)
Reading to oneself Writing thoughts and observation (diary, journal) Thinking / sense-making

2. Interpersonal communication
Takes place between two or more individuals on a personal, face-to-face level meetings, employment interviews, or direct selling

Types of interpersonal communication behaviour
Verbal cues Non-verbal cues

Verbal cues: Vocalised or spoken form in sending the message. Business communication consider two styles Formality written is more formal than spoken for example: I’ve (I have), we’d (we would/had) used mostly in conversation We do not use perhaps, Diplomacy English can sound diplomatic Examples- I’d like instead of I want That is not very likely instead of That is impossible

Non-verbal Cues: process of communication through sending and receiving messages that are not spoken in the form of body language Gestures Postures facial expression dress and physical appearance and eye contact

Activity 1 Change these spoken English phrases to more formal written language: 1. I'd like an answer from you soon. 2. If I were you, I'd launch the new product in April. 3. We'd suggest that you consider a different option. 4. Why don't we meet next Tuesday afternoon? 5. You can solve the problem in two ways.

Activity 2 Change these direct statements to more diplomatic statements: I want to look at the report now We can‘t possibly do that Next month is impossible I am fed up with these late payments-this is the third time! This machinery is much too sophisticated for what we need

3. Group Communication Occurs in groups between 3 to 20 individuals.
Also known as small group communication Mixes interpersonal communication interactions with social clustering

Activity 3 1) Writing a blog
Based on the situations below, determine whether they belong to intrapersonal communication, interpersonal communication or group communication 1) Writing a blog 2) Lily giving a thumb‘s up to her sister‘s cooking 3) ―Hello and welcome to our charity fundraiser, we hope to get a lot of money for charity tonight.‖ 4) Conciously appreciating the sunrise 5) ―I kept thinking about the decision made by him yesterday‖ 6) Siti had a beautiful dream last night 7) Chatting with Kelly on MSN Chat 8) ―So, Miss Suzana, can you tell me a little bit about yourself?‖ 9) ― I think he is crazy, talking to himself all day long!‖ 10) ―We are here in our counseling program in order to help each other in any way we can‖.
