The prosecution’s case
1940 September Demjanjuk was drafted into the Soviet army. 1942 May Demjanjuk was captured by German forces. 1942 July Demjanjuk was selected by the SS to receive guard training. 1943 March Demjanjuk was assigned to Sobibor. “He knew the purpose of this camp...he had the opportunity to escape – he was well dressed, had food, boots, a weapon and weekends off. He...took part in all aspects of the process – assisting in unloading the trucks, the undressing and forcing people into the gas chambers with the use of fire weapons...he was aware of the...suffering of the victims; he acted out of cruelty and was merciless...he knew the pretence of the showers” (notes from the trial). The charge was assisted cruelty and murder of 27,900 Jewish people (later changed to 28,060).
