3-4 Arithmetic Sequences
Sequence: A set of numbers, called terms, in a specific order. Arithmetic Sequence: A numerical pattern that increases or decreases at a constant rate or value called the common difference (difference between the terms). 1,4,7,10… 1 + 3 = 4 4 + 3 = 7 7 + 3 = 10
4
Determine whether each sequence is arithmetic. Justify your answer.
-15, -13, -11, -9,… yes, the difference is +2 each time No, the difference is not constant each time.
5
Find the next 3 terms of the sequence.
-8, -11, -14, -17,… What is the common difference? -3 What are the next 3 terms? -20, -23, -26 Now look at the table set up on page It leads to a formula that is useful in finding any term in an arithmetic sequence.
6
nth Term of a Sequence The nth term an of an arithmetic sequence with first term a1 and common difference d is given Where n is a positive integer.
7
Find the 9th term in the sequence 7, 11, 15, 19
What is a1? 7 What is n? 9 What is d? +4
8
Consider the sequence -8, 1, 10, 19,…
Write an equation for the nth term of the sequence. Find the 12th term. Find the 35th term.
