CLOUDS
2
These cloud types can be used to predict the weather.
There are three basic types of clouds: stratus, cirrus, and cumulus. All other clouds are a combination of these three. These cloud types can be used to predict the weather.
3
Cloud Formation Clouds form when water vapor rises and cools. Clouds are made of tiny drops of water and ice crystals. These drops stick to dust and other tiny particles in the air.
4
1. warming (evaporation) 2. cooling (condensation)
There are 2 conditions necessary for clouds to form: 1. warming (evaporation) 2. cooling (condensation)
5
What do clouds tell us? Clouds just don’t happen - there’s always a reason. A particular cloud’s shape and location depend on (and tell us about): - the movement of the air - amount of water vapor in air - stability (flat clouds = stable air while puffy clouds = unstable air)
6
How are clouds named? Clouds are named according to their altitude (how high up something is in the sky) and their general shape
8
Cloud-Word Meanings Cirrus – curl of hair Stratus – stretch
Cumulus – heap Nimbo – rain Alto – middle
