This is called the Break up out of jail method
2
Multiplying binomials
A binomial has two terms. We will be multiplying pairs of numbers.
3
Example 1 Multiplying binomials
+ -5 (x – 3) The (x – 5) must break up so they can break ( x – 3) out of jail.
4
Example 1 Multiplying binomials
+ -5 x² – 3x + -5x + 15 Now break out of jail.
5
Example 1 Multiplying binomials
x² – 3x + -5x + 15 x² – 8x + 15 Combine like terms.
6
Example 1 Multiplying binomials
x² – 8x + 15 Final Answer
7
Example 2 Multiplying binomials
+ 4 (x + 2) The (x + 4) must break up so they can break ( x + 2) out of jail.
8
Example 2 Multiplying binomials
+ 4 x² + 2x + 4x + 8 Now break out of jail.
9
Example 2 Multiplying binomials
x² + 2x + 4x + 8 x² + 6x + 8 Combine like terms.
10
Example 2 Multiplying binomials
x² + 6x + 8 Final Answer

Multiplying binomials
Your final answer should always have an x² first and a whole number at the end. This is called standard form.
12
Multiplying binomials Try this one on your own:
