Jewelry Day 13 Tribal Bracelets diagonal pattern

3 Agenda for today Review what we did last time.
Presentation on where tribal bracelets came from. Demonstration where you follow along and create rows of diagonal knot pattern.

4 Last time We worked on our pendants the entire time.
The last 10 minutes of class we filled out the artist statement and rubric for the pendant than turned it in. If you were not here or did not finish you will need to be in study hall until you are done.

5 The meaning and history of the tribal bracelets

6 Where did they come from?

7 Chinese culture Knot-tying arts have developed independently in different parts of the world. The earliest decorative knots are from China as early as period 481 to 221 B.C.E.

8 Arabia Macramé: the official craft of tying knots into intricate patterns, is said to have developed in 13th century Arabia. It was used as a fringe at the edges of items made on a loom. Sailors later used them to pass time at sea

9 Africa Later in Africa beads (a form of currency) were added to the not tying bracelets

10 Africa It is an African tradition for young girls to send a boy a beaded bracelet of different colors. The boy will court her for a while at the appropriate time, he will ask her the meaning of the beads. The Zulu people use beads to carry messages known as “ucu”, a Zulu term for “love letters”.

11 Australian Aborigines

12 Native American Tribes
What we will be doing is based off of native American tribes knot tying

13 Diagonal pattern I will do two rows so you can see how it works.
Than we will do one together as a group. Lastly I will let you go to complete at least 10 rows on your own.

14 Studio Time You should be creating at least 10 rows of left knots to show a diagonal bracelet pattern. Each string should be one yard stick in length. Fold the string in half and tie a knot at the top creating a loop. Left knots across look like a 4 also make sure you make a look not a knot that you bring up to the top of the other string. You always need 2 looks on each string.

15 Clean up Make sure all your strings are in your box.
You should have one set of 4 strings for each section.
