Others make money off of miners by providing food, clothing and supplies Set up rules for conduct Had vigilantes—self appointed law enforcers who settled serious disputes

3 Mining Towns As towns grew, they had marshals and sheriffs
“boomtowns”—only survived until gold/silver ran out Big companies move in to take mineral wealth from the Earth Mining fuels industrial development

Providing money in the form of loans Giving land grants to companies Central Pacific started laying track eastward from Sacramento, California Used a lot of Asian immigrants

5 Railroads and the west Union Pacific headed west from Omaha, Nebraska
Used a lot of Irish immigrants Two tracks meet in Promontory Summit, Utah Final spike was made out of gold

6 Cattle Kingdom—prior to migration
Eastern settlers and Mexicans in Texas branded cattle and had an open range system Cowboys would round up the cattle in the spring and take them to a railroad that would bring them to the auctions to be sold Trip to the rail road could take weeks to months
