2 Why a contract This type of agreement ensures that adequate planning and comprehensive advice and supervision is put in place It is a shared commitment It provides a formal structure to guide both the student and supervisor Elements of the contract can feed into the quality assurance system

3 TYPES of AGREEMENTS Agreements of general nature pertaining to the dynamics of supervision Agreements pertaining to the specific research These two agreements may constitute a contract
