1 Learning organization activity 1
Words of welcome, acknowledgement of Traditional Territories and opening thoughts for the team.

2 Shifting our work culture and how we work
We want to work together in a better way, and become a more effective organization and team. To do that, we need to change some of our habits and behaviours at work, which can be hard to do. Government of Yukon

3 5 Monkeys and a Ladder: a social experiment
This video explains a study from 1966 that shows how negative patterns of behaviour in a culture may develop and become an obstacle to learning over time. 4 Becoming a learning organization
Purpose To become more effective as an organization in supporting learners and to make our organization a better place to work by: Shifting how we work and our workplace culture Seeing ourselves and each other as learners, our workplace as a learning environment and our department as a learning organization Improving how we communicate, collaborate and coordinate our work If we want to change our work culture, we need to be open to learning and create safe spaces for each other to learn together. The learning organization framework helps us to see ourselves and each other as learners, and our workplace as a learning environment. In response to the results of the Yukon government Employee Engagement Surveys and feedback from staff, we are committing to becoming a learning organization by implementing a new Learning Organization Framework, which reflects and is aligned with the modernization of student learning and curriculum in K-12 schools. The purpose of this project is to become more effective as an organization and to make our organization a better place to work by: Shifting how we work and our workplace culture Seeing ourselves and each other as learners, our workplace as a learning environment and our department as a learning organization Improving how we communicate, collaborate and coordinate our work

5 Learning Organization Framework
About the framework It is a way to think about how we become a learning organization and how we work together, to see ourselves as learners and our workplaces as learning environments. It builds a common understanding of how we will make our workplace into a learning environment, using competencies, principles of learning and inquiry. It is based on an individual and collective commitment to lifelong learning and growth mindsets in all areas of our organization – from students to staff. Everyone is responsible for shifting how we work together. So what is the framework?

6 Personal and Social Awareness
Learning Organization Framework Learning Environment COMPETENCIES (developing skills) Personal and Social Awareness Communication Critical and Creative Thinking Modeling Interpersonal Skills and Personal Responsibility Promoting Common Values and Ethics Developing People Influencing Others Leading Change and Innovation Thinking Strategically Taking Action and Achieving Results Client Focus Literacy Numeracy YFN Ways of Knowing & Doing PRINCIPLES of LEARNING Learner Centered Learners at the Center To foster lifelong learning and develop the essential skills, knowledge and personal qualities needed to thrive in life. The Social Nature of Learning Emotions are integral to learning Recognizing Individual Difference Instructions: This framework is about how we will work and learn together, and make our workplaces into modern learning environments. We are becoming a learning organization, and this framework identifies the elements of our learning environment, which are same for students and staff, in schools and in the main building. 1. Give staff a few minutes to look at the framework and ask them to think about which elements they know well and already use and which elements they think they need to learn more about. 7 What does success look like and how do we get there?
Starting question for this month’s activity: What does success look like and how do we get there? Brainstorming and collaborative activities with your team Goals: To identify the factors that impact success, that must be addressed or that are need to be in place in order to solve a problem or fulfill an opportunity; and, to gather information and identify how well teams know the elements of the framework and where they may want to focus to deepen their understanding of applying these elements in our work. This month, we are creating an idea tree, where staff envision what a better work culture and learning organization would look like for us and identify what they think are key conditions to be successful in working together in a better way using this framework. Government of Yukon

8 Creating an idea tree Learning activity 1: Supplies for this activity:
Poster paper Paper for writing/drawing Post-it notes Pens Markers (different colours) Tape Activity instructions: The learning activity this month is to create an idea tree, where staff work together to envision what our work culture could be as a learning organization and to begin to identify what factors will help us succeed in improving how we work through this framework. The end product is a visual representation of ways we can all implement this framework in how we work and what we hope to become as an organization. All staff are participating in this learning activity and the photos of all their idea trees will be available for all staff to view through the intranet site and on the Curriculum and Assessment educator portal. 1. From each table, tape a poster onto a wall and ask someone to draw a big tree with branches and roots on it, to represent the learning organization framework. Government of Yukon

9 Part 1: Leaves Exercise: “Future headline”
Imagine a few years from now that we have been so successful in becoming a learning organization that we are going to be featured on the cover of a magazine. In pairs, interview each other and create the cover page and headline to share with your group. What did your team do that made it so successful? How did your team become so good at communicating with each other and with other staff? How did your team work together and with others to deliver better services to learners, and include the right people on the right projects? How did your team coordinate across the organization? How did they connect their work with the larger goals of Education? Part 1 exercise instructions: Ensure staff have the paper, pens, markers and tape. What outcomes are we hoping for? What would our work culture look like if we have successfully become a learning organization and are working together effectively? Find a buddy who is someone you don’t usually work with. Everyone should be in pairs. Pairs then interview each other for an article about how their team accomplished this achievement (2 minutes, then switch roles for 2 minutes) Pairs should next draw/design a cover page for the magazine and write the headline on it (5 minutes) Pairs share their cover page and headlines with the group, and any key insights about the outcomes we hope to achieve with this project (10 minutes) Tape their cover pages onto the branches of the tree as the leaves Government of Yukon

11 Part 2: Roots Exercise: Mapping the factors for success
What data, tools, resources and supports does our organization need to be successful in improving how we work together? Part 2 exercise instructions: Ensure staff have post-its and pens. Individually or in small groups, each person writes down their ideas to answer these questions on post-its. (3 minutes) In small or full team groups, they should share their answers and organize them by common theme, then stick them on the roots of the tree diagram (5 minutes) Using their markers, teams/individuals should add a dot on the three post-it notes in the roots of the tree that they think are most important and most urgent (5 minutes) Government of Yukon

12 Sharing our learning and making it visible
All tools and resources will be available to staff on Yukonnect, the educators portal and the G drive: G:\General\Learning Organization Framework Take a photo of your team’s idea tree, some close ups of the post-its and cover pages, to share. Instructions: Take a clear photo of your team’s idea tree, with some close ups of the post-its and cover pages. Add these photos, with your team name in the file title, to the G drive before December 21, 2018: G:\General\Learning Organization Framework\Learning activity 1_November 2018\Idea tree photos We will be sharing the photos of everyone’s idea trees. We suggest you keep your idea tree, as you may want to use it for later activities about visible learning and looking back on progress. Government of Yukon

13 Reflection and feedback
If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. Give your team a few minutes after the activities to share any overall insights or reflections with the group. Ask for questions, feedback and suggestions on today’s learning activity that you can then share with your supervisor and the organizing team for this work going forward. We are on a learning journey together and it is up to all of us to change how we work together and change our work culture. Send this feedback and your photos from the learning activities by December 21. Government of Yukon
