Silk Road, Indian Ocean routes, Trans-Saharan routes, and Mediterranean Sea routes diffused ideas, religion, and technology. 2. Major technological developments (compass, improved shipbuilding, and gunpowder) shaped the development of the world.

13 Key ideas from Unit Two 3. Movement of people made a huge impact. Nomadic groups (Turks, Mongols, Vikings) interacted with settled people leading to further change and development (technology, culture, etc.) 4. Religions such as Islam, Christianity, and Buddhism, focused on the principle of equality. Patriarchal values continued to dominate, yet women were able to access the monastic life as an alternative path . 5. Religion (spread by trade) often acted as a unifying force. Christianity, Confucianism, and Buddhism all acted in this way and helped create cultural identity. 6. Political structures of many areas adapted and changed to the new conditions of the world (impact of the Mongols, isolation of Western Europe and Japan=decentralized gov., Byzantine empire, Arab Caliphates, Tang and Song dynasties=centralized gov.
