To understand the use of propaganda. By the end of the lesson... ALL OF US will be able to describe how propaganda was used and extract information from sources and combine it with your own knowledge. 3 Propaganda was always an important tool for Nazi rule, but it was gained a new importance during the war years.

Source B, a poster released in February 1943, just after the defeat of Germany at Stalingrad. It reads: ‘Victory or Bolshevik Chaos. (Bolsheviks are Russian communists)

6 So, what did you find out about the use of propaganda?
Are they very similar, or are there differences between the two? The war was going very well for Germany until the invasion of Russia began to turn against them. After the famous defeat of Germany at Stalingrad in January 1943 the nature of propaganda changed. At the start of the war there was more focus on celebrating victories, however in later propaganda there was more focus on ensuring that all areas of Germany were supporting the war.

7 Now create two propaganda posters of your own. One from the early years. One from the later years.
Germany successful. Beaten in Russia. Some rationing. Fear of Russian revenge. People need to make small sacrifices. Bombing Encouraging women to vote. All women have to work Encouraging children to ‘help out’. Volkssturm

8 From all that you have seen today, how important do you think propaganda was during the war effort?
