2 Today’s Homework Read and annotate the poem for words with STRONG connotations

3 Today’s Objectives You will review the last three vocabulary words in preparation for your exam by taking notes on definition, synonym, sentence from selection, and by creating a picture in order to show mastery by creating sentences correctly using three of the words Work with a group to illustrate your competence in using the 11 vocabulary words we have been studying by creating an original short story incorporating at least two characters, setting, a conflict and resolution, and demonstrating mastery of all 11 words by displaying correct usage.

4 Petrified Definition: (v) to paralyze with astonishment, horror, or other strong emotion Synonyms: terrified; shocked Sentence from Selection: We stood stunned, petrified. Could this be just a nightmare (pg. 31)?

5 Surreal Definition (adj): marked by the intense irrational reality of a dream Synonyms: unbelievable, fantastic Sentence: His very presence in the procession was enough to make the scene seem surreal (pg. 17).”

6 Weary Definition: physically or mentally exhausted by hard work, exertion or strain Synonyms: tiredness; fatigue Sentence from selection: Even Moishe the Beadle had fallen silent. He was weary of talking (pg. 8).

7 Vocabulary Sentences Take 3 minutes to write the last of your sentences You may write one sentence for each word or use three words in one sentence or two words in one As long as you use three of the words, you will get all the credit TRY TO USE THEM CORRECTLY PLEASE

10 Grouping Protocols For this assignment there are four roles:
Team Leader (keeps everyone on task, facilitates discussion, & asks the teacher questions when necessary) Scribe (writes and/or types assignment & ensures submission) Fact Checker (uses dictionary, thesaurus, & any necessary text to correct grammar, spelling, and quotations) Speaker (presents the group’s assignment to the class)

11 Vocabulary Test In order to show mastery of the 11 words we have studied, you will create an original short story correctly using EVERY word Follow the rubric to receive a high score You may use whatever resources you need to complete the story *except me—I cannot help you with your test* The scribe decides how the completed assignment will be submitted (via chart paper, , or USB) It MUST be complete and turned in before the bell rings for the end of the period
