Purpose of Scholarships
To provide funds for post-secondary education To recognize student achievement To provide funds for extended opportunities in post-secondary Prestige Income Tax deduction and advertising for businesses To give back to the Community Purpose of Scholarships

Types of Scholarships & Awards

Scholarships based on academic achievement, may be renewable if high marks are maintained

BC Excellence Scholarships
55 awards of $5000 One student nominated by school Winners must demonstrate community service and aptitude/commitment to chosen career path. BC Excellence Scholarships

BC Achievement Scholarships
3000 students with the highest cumulative average based on courses required for graduation get $1250 No need to apply – YAY! BC Achievement Scholarships

Graduation Program Exam Scholarships
Grade 10-12, highest provincial exam scores can receive one of the following scholarships… Awarded to the top 500 Grade 12 students in BC based on their score on all 5 provincial exams ($1250) Top 20 Students in BC get a $2500 scholarship ** Canadian citizen or landed immigrant Must write all the provincial exams required for graduation No need to apply – yay! Graduation Program Exam Scholarships

District/Authority Awards
Awarded for excellence in non-academics Rewards graduating students for superior achievement in their chosen non-academic field Fine Arts Second Languages Applied Skills Community Service Physical Activity Technical and Trades Training Application is made by completing the Argyle Scholarship Application Form and submitting before deadline Argyle is normally allotted 25 of these awards of $1250 each District/Authority Awards

Argyle Awards – Application Required
Argyle awards available to students registered in Grade 12 for the first time must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant. Preference will be given to students who have attended Argyle for at least two years. Argyle awards are made available through the generosity of clubs, businesses and individuals and have different criteria. By submitting a completed Argyle scholarship application form students will be considered for all the awards that pertain to them. Argyle Awards – Application Required

Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship
Must be a BC resident and Canadian citizen/Landed Immigrant Must show evidence of commitment to and aptitude for a teaching career $5,000 to 20 outstanding students (maintaining a B average in all courses with no more than one grade 12 mark at the C+ level) Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship

Value and criteria for college or university entrance scholarships
Post-Secondary Institutes offer a variety of awards to students entering their 1st year. Application form and marks in the 85-90% range along with community involvement are required. Some major entrance awards require community service and nomination from Argyle (Queen’s, Western) Deadline: varies - check websites! Entrance bursaries must demonstrate financial need Need must be above and beyond “the ordinary” Value and criteria for college or university entrance scholarships

What You Should Be Doing
October to December Make sure your academic program is correct (verify transcript) Check with parents’ workplace for financial aid Complete student Statement of Activities Prepare resume, get reference letters Check Ms. Malone’s scholarship document regularly Search Internet for scholarships, financial aid Do the ELTS or TOEFL tests if you’re ELL student Do the SAT if you’re interested in US universities What You Should Be Doing

Check and double-check deadlines Remember, some scholarships require you to apply NOW Fill in service hour forms Make sure you are finished any DL courses by Jan 30 for UBC. Think about who you want to write reference letters for you
The person you ask should know you quite well The “status” of the person is less important than how weel they know you You MUST give them a copy of your résumé and/or Statement of Activities You MUST give them at least two weeks to write the letter If you have more than one application, ask for multiple copies If the letter is confidential, you can only get one copy Do not request a letter unless you plan to use it! Reference Letters

External Scholarships
Follow the instructions on the application YOU are responsible for gathering info YOU are responsible for meeting the deadline YOU may be required to mail in your applications. YOU may need to submit an electronic copy. Many applications are disqualified because applicants did not follow the directions External Scholarships

Well-rounded (academics, community service, extra- curricular, leadership) Excellent time management and ability to research and plan At least an 80% average and above Students with high grades 9-12, have an advantage Dedicated to the application process and can follow directions! Before you apply Plan ahead and do your research
Prepare a resume and order transcripts Request letters of recommendation from a teacher, a community member, coach and/or an extra-curricular supervisor. Know everything there is to know about the scholarship (expectations, requirements, eligibility, deadline for applications) Before you apply

Application Etiquette
Fill in all sections of the application unless not applicable Always tell the truth Use standard white paper for essays and resumes, Times New Roman Font size 12 Ensure the application is proofread and spellchecked Type the final copy of the application or write neatly Photocopy application package before mailing Application Etiquette

Students with Exceptionalities
Students identified with a disability can receive accommodations/adaptations and may also qualify for additional financial assistance at university and college Students are responsible for providing the school with documentation of their disability Scholarships are available for specific disabilities and special needs in general National Educational Association of Disabled Students Students with Exceptionalities
