What to Practice

2 Scales/chords Keep working on your scale sheet
Either play through a different set each day or Play through a given set of scales until they are memorized Play them on your main instrument and the piano! The piano will help you learn to hear the chord and the scale Set goals try to have certain scales memorized by the end of the week or month. Try to push yourself

3 Practicing improvisation
First make sure you can play up and down your scales in basic patterns for various lengths of time 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 bars at a time Then improvise just on your scales working different sequences and patterns in the same sequence Then start with a blues from maybe vol 54 of the aebersold and play shuffle time or one of the other blues in the book Then start working with other songs and improvising on them

4 What about piano? Start learning piano,
Learn to play simple scales Start learning to play the things you play on your main instrument on the piano. Start learning basic jazz chords and scales on the piano

5 What about learning harmony
Analyze Chords Watch jeff Schneider videos on various jazz subjects to learn different elements of jazz scales and harmony Watch rick beato videos also they tend to be more in depth and are very well done

Learn the melody Listen to jazz legends play the tune Start learning the chords then learn the scales then start improvising through the progression of chords Then work different tempos The play the tune in all 12 keys! (Professional jazz plays don’t think in a scale they think in all 12 of them! Yikes)

7 sightreading Work through different Jamey aebersold books
Sight read different real book tunes Work through the Charlie parker omnibook, you will be learning classic licks plus awesome solos and tunes that everybody else already knows, so you should too ( ook.pdf) Get the Gordon Goodwin lead book for your instrument start with volume 1. these are amazing sight reading resources and study resources Many young players work or fixate on one song for to long start to branch out.

8 Listening Lab Make sure you listen to each tune or solo that you sightread Make sure that you listen to the main players on your instrument and become familiar with their style Then start listening to the great players on the other instruments and become familiar with their licks Whenever you find a tune you like, either learn it by ear or get the music for it! Whenever you find a solo you like, learn it by ear or find a transcription
