4. What do you think school is like in China?
In China, the education system is run by the state through a Ministry of Education. Chinese law says that all citizens are entitled to 9 years of free compulsory schooling – six years in primary school and three years in middle school (ages usually) After that, parents must pay if their children wish to attend high school.

Many Chinese teenagers instead go on to vocational schools, where they learn the skills to become specialist technicians or factory workers.

5. Before 1949 the Chinese literacy rate was just 20%.
Thanks to China’s massive economic growth, millions of Chinese people have been lifted out of poverty. Both access to education and the quality of basic education in China has greatly increased in the past 30 years.
A country’s Literacy Rate refers to the percentage of people who are able to read and write vs those who are not.
Before 1949 the Chinese literacy rate was just 20%.
By 2013 the Chinese literacy rate was 93%.

As we know there remain significant areas of extreme poverty in rural areas of China, and figures published by the World Bank show that three main groups of people are not experiencing these high levels of access to and quality of education:

8. Watch the video and take notes on the following:
Rural Poverty is a major problem. All urban students now receive free tuition, and students from low-income families receive free textbooks and materials, but education opportunities for rural students are few and far between, and of poor quality.
The average urban student spends around 10 years in school, while the average rural student only spends 6 years in school. 67% of urban students go to high school, compared to only 23% of rural students. In rural areas, only 20% of teachers have 4-year degrees.

9. Female Students also suffer inequality in China because Chinese society has traditionally favoured boys. On average, girls receive 1 year less of schooling than boys, and their literacy rate is half that of men.
Rural girls, in particular, face a double disadvantage – as rural children, they have fewer opportunities than urban children, and as girls, they have fewer opportunities than boys.

Recent surveys have shown only 40% of migrant worker children in Beijing are enrolled in school compared to 100% of Beijing registered children.

12. What are the Chinese government doing to try and tackle educational inequality?
Introduced a 12 year plan to improve rural education by renovating rural schools.
The Chinese government have recognised that the deepening educational gap, especially between urban and rural children needs to be addressed.
The government have slowly introduced a new curriculum (over a 16 year period) to allow children more chance to develop as individuals
Offering free vocational training in rural areas for ex-migrant workers
Increased the number of bi-lingual schools for ethnic minority students.
