2 Point by Point Structure
With the point-by-point method, the essay is broken down into at least three areas to compare and contrast. Each body paragraph is devoted to one main idea. Topic A is discussed within the paragraph; then, topic B is discussed.

4 Point-by-Point Outline Example
Topic- cats and dogs Thesis- Both cats and dogs make excellent pets, but an appropriate choice depends on the pet owner’s lifestyle, finances, and household accommodations.

5 Main Idea 1: Lifestyle Topic Sentence- Cats make less of an impact on an owner’s lifestyle. Cats Don’t have to be watched during the day Easier to get care if owner travels Dogs Pack animals shouldn’t be left alone Harder to get care when away

6 Main Idea 2: Finances Topic Sentence- Cats are less expensive to own and care for. Cats Food and health care are usually less expensive. Less likely to cause property damage. Dogs Food is more expensive. Over-breeding causes some health problems.

7 Main Idea 3: Household Accommodations
Topic Sentence- Cats need fewer special house accommodation. Cats Don’t take up much space Less intrusive Dogs Often need yard and fence Require more safety and protective measures
