CXT Parts Dept. and Fab Shop Improvements
Haley Ferguson, Jason Hensley, Mike Jones
2
Outline Parts Department Create "Pick Lists"
Use radios for interdepartmental communication Incremental improvements for: Cutting rebar Cutting mesh Working on floor plates Fab Shop Department Overproduction - huge batch sizes Movement of finished parts Organize parts in welding table areas Storage of everything overall appears very unorganized Fab Shop Layouts
3
Parts Department - Pick Lists
Issue: The process of pulling the parts that are loaded onto the carts can be problematic and confusing.
4
Parts Department - Communication
Issue: Employees must walk across the shop floor to communicate with the other departments.
5
Parts Department - Incremental Improvements
Issue: The rebar cutting area seems to be inefficient with regards to moving cut pieces to the side, bundled, and labeled.
6
Parts Department - Incremental Improvements
Problem 4: Floor plates are moved from the shop floor over the mesh to the upper work station then moved back down once completed.
7
Parts Department - Incremental Improvements
Issue: There isn't anything to secure the wheels of the carts.
8
Parts Department - Incremental Improvements
Problem 6: There is a lot of wasted motion kicking the hose out of the way when the workers are cutting the mesh.
9
Fab Shop - Overproduction
Issue: Overproduction of parts creates inefficiencies.
10
Fab Shop - Movement of Finished Parts
Issue: Moving finished goods from the stud station in the Fab Shop is time consuming and difficult.
11
Fab Shop - Organize Welding Areas
Issue: Work station welding platform is cluttered, which slows down set up time. In addition to this, welding helmets/lockers aren't located near the welding tables.
12
Fab Shop - Overall Storage
Issue: There is a lot of clutter and items that could be moved, stored in a more space-efficient way, or thrown away completely.

Fab Shop Layouts: Linear

Fab Shop Layouts: Branched

Fab Shop Layouts: U-Shape

Advantages Disadvantages
Linear Follows the current work flow (saw-iron worker-drill press-stud station) Moves welding areas away from the main working areas Saw worker can work on the iron worker while material is cut Finished goods are near inventory storage Natural progression from one station to the next Punch and CNC end of the iron worker are not next to the rollers Complete re-design of the current work area Branched Takes up old walk way Difficult to operate the saw and Iron worker with one person Puts iron worker near raw materials, could be an obstacle when loading/moving raw materials with the crane U-Shape Moves welding areas away from the main working areas Less obstacles for loading/unloading of raw materials by crane Possibly hard to pass through work area (especially from the drill press) Saw and iron worker could not be operated by the same person
