2 Header Pg 53 I can explain the historical development of the periodic table Hmwk: Metric 1 Step Calculation & LOC 3 List Quiz Next Class Warm-Up #1 Pg 46 The largest mass of a pumpkin weighed in at kg. How many pounds is this if 1 pound is equal to kg?

3 PT History Walk Take your worksheet with you and find a poster for each scientist. Fill in your worksheet or correct your answers. History notes will get put in on pg 53.

4 Seaborg WHO THE _____ FOUND THE F BLOCK? Take some notes on pg 53
You need at least 5 facts from the video on Seaborg Seaborg Found the F Block & FOUND URANIUM!

5 Modern Periodic Table 4 New elements have been added to the periodic table in 2016! Elements are still being hunted!

6 Element 113 Discoverers: RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science (Japan) proposed the name nihonium  Proposed symbol Nh. Nihon is one of the two ways to say “Japan” in Japanese, and literally mean “the Land of Rising Sun”. The name is proposed to make a direct connection to the nation where the element was discovered

7 Element 115 Discoverers at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna (Russia) Proposed name is moscovium  Proposed symbol Mc  Moscovium is in recognition of the Moscow region and honors the ancient Russian land that is the home of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research

8 Element 117 Discoverers: Oak Ridge National Laboratory (USA), Vanderbilt University (USA) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (USA). Proposed name tennessine Proposed symbol Ts Tennessine is in recognition of the contribution of the Tennessee region including the production and chemical separation of unique actinide target materials for superheavy element

9 Element 118 Discoverers: Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna (Russia) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (USA) Proposed the name oganesson  Proposed symbol Og Honoring a scientist and recognizes Professor Yuri Oganessian (born 1933) for his pioneering discovery of superheavy elements and significant advances in the nuclear physics

10 Wrap-UP Newly discovered elements can be named after: (a) a mythological concept/character or astronomical object (b) a mineral or similar substance, (c) a place, or geographical region, (d) a property of the element, or (e) a scientist. On your paper create a new Element! Include: Name, Atomic #, Mass, Properties

11 Exit Ticket Show all your work on your notecard.
An medium sonic slush is L. How many milliliters is this?

12 Pg 52 I can identify properties of chemical families on the PT
BOX CHECK: You need 1 full pack of color pencils in your box 4 pairs of scissors 4 glue sticks 1 set of sticky notes 4 red pens 1 eraser 1 pencil sharpener

13 Family 1 Family Name: Alkali Metals Valence Electrons: 1
Ion forming: Cations Classification: Metals Properties: Highly Reactive

14 Header Pg 54 I can explain atomic radii periodic trend Hmwk: Metric with sf & properties homework Warm-Up #2 Pg 46 A wireless router supports a range of up to 4,572 cm indoors. What is this length in m?

15 Family 2 Family Name: Alkaline Earth Metals Valence Electrons: 2
Ion forming: Cations Classification: Metals Properties: Less Reactive than Alkali Ca turnings?

16 Family 7 Family Name: Halogens Valence Electrons: 7
Ion forming: Anions Classification: Nonmetals Properties: Increasing Boiling Point- change in states Br & Hg are the only 2 liquids at room temp!

17 Family 8 Family Name: Noble Gas Valence Electrons: 8 Ion forming: None
Classification: Nonmetals Properties: Most stable elements

18 Color in your PT

19 Periodic Table Families
You will receive a set of cards. You will follow the instructions on the WORKSHEET! Fill in the worksheet as you go. When you’re done make an observation about the radius of atoms on pg 54 Try to determine the trend/pattern for atomic radius from the cards.

20 PG 54: Electron Configuration
Families (columns) get names. Periods (rows) get numbers. Number your periodic table by rows. These are ENERGY LEVELS We can further divide the periodic table into 4 sections or SUBLEVELS In you groups come up with 4 blocks on the periodic table- think about properties!

21 Sublevels Sublevels describe the shape of atoms in 3D space. Used to predict bonding We divide the PT into S, P, D, F, Sublevels

22 Sublevels Color your PT you just numbered

23 Orbitals Orbitals: within a subshell, the position or house for an electron. Where electrons reside There are always 2 electrons in 1 orbital. S block has ____ orbitals P block has ____ orbitals D block has ____ orbitals F block has ____ orbitals

24 3 minutes Create an anagram to help you remember the electron configuration sublevels and orbital #’s!

25 Metric Conversion with SigFigs Practice
You will solve the problem on your white board. When you are done stand up so your group members know you’re done. When everyone is standing compare answers. Coach and give tips once you’ve decided on an answer When you agree on an answer and everyone understands take a seat.

26 How many picoseconds are in 60 seconds?
How many liters are in your daily mL water intake?

27 A monster gerbil weighs 1.23x104 kg. How many g does the gerbil weigh?
When the gerbil runs on his wheel, he runs for m. How many cm is this?

28 A block of cheese takes up a volume of 289.000 μL. How many L is this?
dm is equivalent to how many m?

29 Metric Quiz 10 minutes It’s double sided
