3 A Raisin in the Sun Today, we’re doing one more warm up activity before we start reading on Friday. As a recap, we’re going to start reading “A Raisin in the Sun,” a play about a black family living in the South Side of Chicago in the 1950s. Last time, we researched what life was like for African Americans in Chicago in the 1950s. What do we remember?

4 A Raisin in the Sun Today, we’re going to look at a poem called “A Dream Deferred” by Langston Hughes, another famous author of the Harlem Renaissance. Lorraine Hansberry took the title of her play from a line in Hughes’ poem. Let’s take a closer look at the poem and see what we can figure out why she chose a line from this poem for the title of her play.

5 “A Dream Deferred” Before we start reading the poem, you should know:
“Deferred” means to put something aside and do it later Predict: What does the title mean? What do you think the poem will be about? Let’s read it through twice!

6 “A Dream Deferred” Nike used Langston Hughes’ poem in a commercial in 2012. What do you guys think? Why do you think they chose Hughes’ poem for their commercial? Was it effective?

7 “A Dream Deferred” What do you think?
Let’s start answering those questions on your handout. 1. What does the word “deferred” mean? Define this term in your own words. 2. Describe in your own words what this poem is about. 3. Circle all of the words in the poem that appeal to the senses. Is this imagery positive or negative? How do you know? 4. Look at the words that you’ve circled. What effect does Hughes’s word choice have on the reader? How are these words supposed to make the reader feel? What do you think?

8 “A Dream Deferred” What do you think?
Let’s start answering those questions on your handout. 5. What do you think is the main message of this poem? 6. What is a simile? (Just a quick recap! ) 7. List all of the similes in this poem. 8. What is your favorite line in the poem? Copy it on your paper. Tell me: why is it your favorite? What do you think?

9 “A Dream Deferred” What do you think?
Let’s start answering those questions on your handout. 5. What do you think is the main message of this poem? 6. What is a simile? (Just a quick recap! ) 7. List all of the similes in this poem. 8. What is your favorite line in the poem? Copy it on your paper. Tell me: why is it your favorite? What do you think?

10 “A Dream Deferred” What do you think?
Let’s start answering those questions on your handout. 9. An alternate title for this poem is “Harlem.” How might this change the meaning of the poem? 10. Why do you think Lorraine Hansberry choice a quote from this poem as the title of her play? What predictions can you make about her play as a result? What do you think?

11 “A Dream Deferred” IXL: F.5
Now for the really fun part! Write your own “dream deferred” poem. Think of similes and metaphors that are different from Hughes’s but that communicate the same kinds of emotion and have the same sensory appeal. Start with the question “What happens to a dream deferred?” and then compose 5-7 questions/similes of your own. Use extra paper if you need more space.
