Family Members belong through birth, marriage, or adoption.
Sometimes groups are considered to be families because they share or feel a special bond or affection. Siblings – people who have a common parent.

Types of Families Nuclear Family – consists of parents and children.
Extended Family – consists of relatives other than parents and children. Single-Parent Family – headed by one parent who has never married or is left alone through divorce or death. Stepfamily – only one spouse has children from a previous relationship. Blended Family – both spouses have children from a previous relationship.

Family Life Cycle Beginning – marriage Expanding – have children
Developing – children grow up and go to school. Focus on children. Launching – children move out and go to college or get married. Middle Years – adjust to “empty nest” and plan for retirement. Later Years – retirement and new interests…grandchildren.
