WFPHA Global cCharter
2
We acknowledge the elders and peoples of the Aboriginal people who are the traditional custodians/owners of the lands where we are today. We also acknowledge other First Nations peoples who are with us today.
3
Background WFPHA PET Public Health Functions frameworks (US and EU)
Public health competency sets
4
A Global Charter for the Public’s Health (WFPHA)
5
Methods Five competency sets were mapped against the Global Charter framework CAPHIA, ASPHER, CEPH, CP FPHM, UK FPHM (Canadian set is in revision, therefore not included) Two of us independently mapped the competencies and then discussed discrepancies

Results Very hard to compare: Competency sets are differently written
CAPHIA – within each Domain each Competency is graded and can be used from undergrad to postgrad curriculum design. Suggested content included. ASHPER – complex; content-prescriptive; each Domain is compiled in a slightly different way CEPH – levels for different levels of staff from front line to management; written as outcomes rather than outputs. Complex document, with expected content provided based on functions of public health Aus CP FPHM (does not admit non-medics) – very medical/practice oriented; several are about competent medical practice rather than public health UK FPHM (fellowship obtainable for appropriately trained non-medics) – complex, content prescriptive, directed at safe public health practice

Discussion We note that competencies are about what is expected to be taught, but not pedagogical approaches to delivering content Mapping competencies is difficult – cultural context and different backgrounds (for example, in part they reflect temporal, geographical, and political problems occurring when they were written) Identification of shortfalls/gaps in competency sets All except CAPHIA are used for accreditation of MPH and/or school and/or faculty accreditation WFPHA Global Charter provides a mechanism for being able to compare competency sets, and is another mechanism to check public health course content; could be useful in considering course (re)design
