Figure 1 Intrinsic ISG Expression Protects Stem Cells from Viral Infection Stem cells express high levels of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) in the absence of infection. This protects them from viral infection. However, stem cells are refractory to acute interferon (IFN) signaling. Upon differentiation, cells decrease intrinsic ISG expression, become sensitive to acute IFNs during inflammatory responses, and become susceptible to viral infection.
