Business English Language Workshop Introduction to Numeracy
Alan Daniel TAYLOR Business English Language Workshop Introduction to Numeracy
2
Introduction to Numeracy
Course objectives Strengthen the participants’ knowledge of the use of numers in English Application of this knowledge in the everyday workplace
3
On completion of the Workshop
The participants will: be more familiar with numers in English know how to use these in the everyday workplace be able to express basic formulae and expressions in English
4
Introduction to numbers
Say out loud the following numbers: , ,
5
Arithmetical Operations (1)
Now say the following arithmetical operations: Addition: = 28 term + term = sum Subtraction: 24 – 3 = 21 Multiplication: 24 x 4 = 96 factor x factor = product Division: 4 = 6
6
Arithmetical Operations (2)
Addition: 24 plus 4 is 28 24 and 4 makes/equals 28 Subtraction: 24 less 3 is 21 24 minus 3 makes/equals 21 Multiplication: 24 times 4 is 96 24 (multiplied) by 4 makes 96 Division: 24 divided by 4 is 6 24 over 4 makes/equals 6
7
Powers & Roots (1) Now try the following: Roots 2 24 32 1/32
2 24 32 1/32 Powers and exponentials / x 103 Fractions 4/3 2/3 22/7 -2/3
8
Powers & Roots (2) Roots 2 = 2 to the root 2
2/32 = 2 to the root 2 over 3 Powers and exponentials 22 = 2 (raised) to the power 2 34/3 = 3 to the power 4 over 3 Fractions 4/3 = 4 over 3 -2/3 = minus 2 over 3
9
Mathematical Symbols (1)
Do you know the following mathematical symbols? > < = √
10
Mathematical Symbols (2)
> < Greater than less than greater/equal less or equal = disequal equal plus minus approximately Square brackets Curly brackets brackets pi Infintivy function integral delta √ Tends towards percentage Sum root
11
Algebra Is a branch of mathematics concerning the study of structure, relation and quantity. Linear Equations Ax + By + C = 0 Quadratic Equations Ax2 + By + C = 0
12
Algebraic equations Try saying the following algebraic equations:
(Ax + By + C) x 105 x – (x5 + 2) (2 + 3x) + (1 + y) /3 + 24.2 (x – 2y) x2 – 2
13
Trigonometry Is a branch of mathematical science dealing with triangles. Terminology sin = Sine cos = Cosine tan = Tangent
14
Statistics Is the mathematical science pertaining to the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data. Terminology: Average or Mean is calculated by calculating the sum of all values in a data set and dividing this by the number of values Mode the value that occurs the most frequently in a data set Median is the 'middle value' in your list. When the totals of the list are odd, the median is the middle entry in the list after sorting the list into increasing order
15
Graphs Terminology x axis y axis the x and y axes origin quadrant
intersection
16
Terminology for Graphs
Consider the function: y=1/x: the line approaches the x-axis (y=0), but never touches it. No matter how far we go into infinity, the line will not actually reach y=0, but will always get closer and closer This is know as an: asymptote
17
Straight line graphs and slope
18
Slopes and Gradients In the graphs before (a to f), which contain(s):
a line with a positive slope? a negative slope? slope of zero? infinite slope?
19
Verbs for Graphs Negative Positive to decrease to increase
to drop to fall to decline to rise to diminish to grow to slump to soar to plummet to peak to flatten out to stabilise © Ateneo Impresa SpA - Ad uso esclusivo degli allievi di Ateneo Impresa SpA - Ogni riproduzione è vietata
20
Adverbs/adjectives for Graphs
Some adverbs/adjectives or graphs: slow (ly) rapid (ly) sharp (ly) gradual (ly) progressive (ly) step by step Regular (ly) steady/steadily negative trend positive trend
