The “Occupy Wall Street” movement began in the United States in New York City as a response to the discrepancy between the banking industry—the “1 percent”—that was propped up by favorable U.S. government policies and a massive monetary bailout despite being responsible for the collapse of the world financial system in 2008, and the millions of individuals—the “99 percent”—adversely affected by the practices of these banks who received no help at all from the government. This movement quickly spread to other cities in the United States and then throughout the world.
