What is matter made up of?
3
What is matter made up of?
The Universe is made up of matter. Everything we can see, feel, touch, taste or smell is matter. Matter is something that occupies space and has a mass.
4
What is chemistry? Chemistry is the science which studies the composition of matter.
5
What are atoms? All matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms. We cannot see atoms, they are so tiny!
6
What are atoms made of? Atoms are made of:
Protons- positively charged particles Neutrons-uncharged particles, which join together to form the nucleus Electrons- negatively charged particles When atoms are joined together, they form molecules
7
Matter Matter can be classified into: a. pure substances b. mixtures
Pure substances are made up of a single component with constant properties These properties are compounds or elements Compounds are made up of different types of atoms For example: H2O. Elements are pure substances consisting of atoms of the same type
8
The Periodic Table of Elements
Chemical elements are classified in the periodic table of elements Elements are listed in ascending order according to their atomic number (or the number of protons in the nucleus) All elements in the vertical column (or group) have atoms with the same number of electrons There are 18 vertical columns (called groups) There are 7 horizontal lines (called periods, which indicate the number of outer shells)

What else about matter!? Matter can also be made up of mixtures
Homogeneous Mixtures: are made up of substances that cannot be identified. These substances can be separated only by distillation Example: water and salt Heterogeneous Mixtures: are when we can distinguish the different substances. We can see the two different substances Example: oil and water
