Group Assignment Choose a topic regarding media technology and politics Perform a literature review about a media topic Write an essay about your topic Give a presentation about your topic Examples include: Internet regulation in Canada Role of public broadcasting (CBC) Anonymous – ‘Hactivism’ The media’s role in fostering a ‘culture of fear’ Data mining and/or digital spying Issues regarding social media Technological advances in communication Future of news Participatory journalism

Group Project 1 – Pick a topic (today)
We will make groups of about 4 – 6 people based on the topic that interests you 2 – You will perform a literature review/research on your topic Each member of the group will perform a literature search/research on the topic Each member will write a list of articles that they found or bring the results of the research they conducted 3 – On July 24th, the groups will discuss the research they conducted The group will discuss the articles they read with other group members The group will revise/refine the reading list The group will pick about 10 – 20 sources for the final project EACH PERSON WILL SUBMIT THEIR LITERATURE REVIEW – BIBLIOGRAPHY YOU MUST SHOW UP TO CLASS ON JULY 24th

Group Project 4 – A preliminary report will be due on July 24th. You will have time in class to work on it. The purpose of this is for me to assess your final project before you submit the final copy 5 – Groups can be divided into subsections, each member can be in charge of a specific task You may divide up tasks to facilitate efficiency Everyone is in charge of editing the final paper and presentation 6 – Presentation/submit final paper – August 7th Presentations will be given on August 7th Final paper will be also due on August 7th Submit group notes/minutes of meetings

Grade Breakdown Group Project = 15 %
Preliminary assessment = 2 Final Paper = 10 Presentation = 3 Failure to submit literature review = Failure to show up on July 24th or August 7th = -2 All members of each group must submit the results of their literature review on July 24th Failure to submit the literature review will result in a deduction of 2 points off the individual’s group project grade Failure to show up to class on July 24th and August 7th without a valid excuse (medical reason) will result in a deduction of 2 points off the individual’s group project grade

Assignment – Preliminary Assessment
Preliminary Report Rough outline of your final paper Can be in point form Should contain The names of the members of your group The topic you are interested in writing about Bibliography The tasks that each member of your group will perform A realistic timeline for the completion of each task You must hand in the preliminary assessment at the beginning of class on July 24th

Paper Due August 7th The paper should: Flow well
Contain the names of all group members Be between 10 and 15 pages (body text) Have 10 – 20 sources Flow well Not contain grammatical errors Go into depth about a topic Be well structured Thesis statement(s) Support for your thesis statement(s) Evidence Address any counter evidence

Presentation Presentation Date = August 7th
The presentation notes should: Contain the names of all group members Reflect the information in your paper Contain power point slides (or other presentation notes) Provide a general summary of your topic (abstract) Provide 3 – 5 key terms regarding your topic

Pick a topic and form groups
One person should be in charge of taking notes in each of the group meetings Exchange addresses and circulate the meeting notes Submit a list of your group members and a topic your group wants to focus on
