5 Explore ways to integrate literature into the mathematics classroom.
Objectives for Course Explore ways to integrate literature into the mathematics classroom. Characterize inquiry–based experiences that require math reasoning and communication of that reasoning. Use strategies to help all students deepen and communicate their mathematical reasoning.

6 Why integrate math with literature????
Allows students to reason and make sense of the math. Affords students the opportunity for productive use of discourse when explaining and justifying mathematical thinking. Helps build procedural fluency. Engage students through the use of a variety of tools including concrete materials, drawings, tables and graphs, and mathematical notation to make sense of and represent mathematical ideas. Builds confidence and perseverance in inquiry based activities.

8 Table Team Activity “Multiplication is the most powerful of the four operations.” Agree? Or Disagree? Turn and talk with your table partners to discuss the above statement. (As a table, write the justification(s) for your answer on a post-it note and place it on the proper side of the chart.)

9 Making Connections Connect mathematical ideas or mathematical representations. Students need to learn how to connect multiplication facts. Understand how thinking about 6x8 could give them 6x9. Understand multiplication as repeated addition. Understand the Distributive Property helps combine partial products.

18 Vocabulary in Context Vocabulary Word Banks
Teach vocabulary as an integral part of solving problems. Students need to learn the language of mathematics as they engage in math. Example, in learning about fractions, students explore how the number of parts in the whole relates to size of those parts before they are expected to use the term denominator. Word Banks Create Word Banks as new words are introduced in context. Make personal vocabulary charts Guide students to use vocabulary in communication.
