Topic: Classification of living things The Introduction of Biology
Defining of life Classification of living things Ecosystem and human interferences Basic chemistry, the chemistry of organic molecules Darwin evolutions History of cells Cells structures and functions Photosynthesis and cellular respirations

Classification..??
5
Classification System to organize life Classification System
Genus = closely related species Family = closely related genera
6
Organization of Life Cell Tissue Organ Organ System Organism
Population Community Ecosystem biosphere Smallest Level Largest Level
9
Biological Information
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) Recipe for structure & function Material of heredity
10
Methods of Classification
Common ancestry is basis for classification Taxonomy = science of classifying organisms Systematics Study of diversity of organisms Based on evolutionary relationships
11
Three Main Domains of Life
Archaea Bacteria Eukarya
12
Cell Types of Organisms
Prokaryote (Archaea and Bacteria) No membrane bound organelles Genetic material found in a nucleoid Eukaryote Membrane bound organelles Genetic material in a nucleus
13
Archaea Originally thought to be bacteria Live in extreme habitats
Do not cause disease Prokaryotic Unicellular
14
Bacteria Found nearly everywhere Some cause disease Prokaryotic
Unicellular
15
Eukarya Unicellular or Multicellular Eukaryotic cells
Divided into at least four kingdoms Protista Fungi Plantae Animalia
16
Kingdom Protista Mostly single cell organisms
May actually be up to 20 kingdoms Gave rise to other eukaryotes Paramecium Brown algae amoeba
17
Kingdom Fungi Most are multicellular Absorptive heterotrophs
Most are saprophites Mosses a small green fungi
18
Kingdom Plantae Multicellular Photosynthetic autotrophs
19
Kingdom Animalia Multicellular Heterotrophs

How can we classify our own living things??
Linnaeus (1750’s) used a two-part naming system from Latin. (Dog = Canis familiaris) Binomial Nomenclature = a two-part name 1. Genus = first part of the name (Capitalized) (Groups similar, related organisms) 2. Species = second part of the name. (Lowercase) (Groups similar organisms that can mate and produce fertile offspring)
23
Classifying Your Own House
Worlds (Earth) Continents (North American) Countries (America) States (Louisiana) Parishes (St. Tammany) Cities (Covington Neighborhoods (????…) Streets ( ???…) Houses (???…)
24
Seven Levels of Creature Classification:
Kingdom – Phylum – Class – Order – Family – Genus – Species – “Kingdom” is the biggest and broadest. Each kingdom contains phyla – each phyla contains classes, etc. The more levels that two organisms share, the more characteristics they have in common.
28
Binomial nomenclature
Binomial nomenclature Genus capitalized species not capitalized Both italicized or underlined Scientific name: Apis mellifera Common name: honey bee
