1 TKAM: Ch. 18 TERM NOTES Analysis It's hard not to feel sorry for Mayella. Her father beats her and the siblings do nothing to help around the house. It is so bad that when Atticus calls her Miss Mayella, she assumes that he is making fun of her. She has a miserable existence, but that is no excuse to lie and destroy an innocent man's life. o Tom Robinson is a hard working and honest man. His fatal error is feeling sorry for Mayella. o Tom's story and Atticus' cross-examination of the Ewell's prove that Tom is innocent. o However, with the attitudes and atmosphere in Maycomb, Tom still has no chance.
