2 Language that means exactly what it says.
Figurative Language Language that does NOT mean exactly what it says. Literal Language Language that means exactly what it says.

3 HYPERBOLE A deliberate exaggeration…often used for effect.
I have a TON of homework!

4 SIMILE A comparison of two dissimilar things using “like” or “as”
Example- "And it seems to me you lived your life like a candle in the wind.” Write your own simile!

5 METAPHOR Comparison of two unlike things WITHOUT using “like” or “as” or even “than” One thing literally is another. Example…My heart is a stereo.

6 ALLITERATION The repetition of the initial consonant sound
Example-Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

7 PERSONIFICATION Giving a nonhuman subject some sort of human characteristic Examples-The house was lonely after the people moved out.

8 Onomatopoeia Sound used as a word

9 Allusion A reference to a person, place, or thing in another artistic work (literature, art, music, history, painting, or mythology). Example: Paul’s obsession with money reminds me of King Midas.

10 HOMEWORK! Write a simile about the weekend.
Now write a metaphor about school. Write an example of hyperbole about homework. Write an example of personification about your shoes.
