The belief that Americans had a destiny from God to spread democracy and Christianity throughout the land.

4. 1B. Why was westward expansion such an important issue in the election of 1844?
Westward expansion was an important issue during the election of 1844 because of the slavery question. At the beginning of the 1840s, there was a delicate balance between the number of slave states and free states in the United States. If the U.S. were to annex Texas, the free states would be outnumbered by the slave states. The free states would not allow this to happen since it would greatly decrease their power. The Whigs did not want more slave states, but the Democrats did. However, most people did want new territories because of a booming population and growing economy.
