3 Why use this technique? Charcoal reductions can be used to create chiaroscuros, an Italian word for light and dark; uses heavy contrast to set a mood or tone in a composition La Madeleine: Georges deLa Tour- in the Shadows of Caravaggio, 1593

4 Things to know… Reduction drawings can be made using different media (charcoal; pastel; graphite) An eraser can be used as a drawing tool Gives an artist the ability to understand how light creates form Explores modeled drawing instead of line drawing
