Propaganda of the Great War

The Great War May 1915, Germany sinks the Lusitania for suspicion of shipping contraband. America cuts ties with Germany. 1916 Britain declares universal conscription. May 1917, bread riots erupt the bring donw the Russian Monarchy. 1917, Britain intercepts Germany’s message to Mexico. April 6, 1917, Wilson asks Congress to go to war. January 8, 1918, Wilson issues his 14 points towards peace efforts, and self determination. Germany sought armistice, and on November 11, 1918, the great war came to an end.

Plain Folks Using plain ordinary people to hit the meaning that if you don't do it, you are not a normal person. Example of Total War

Band Wagon Propagandists use this method to persuade people to follow the crowd. Usually they go, if you don't do this, you will be missing out on a lot of good stuff. While they do this that also simultaneously convince the people already on the band wagon to stay on the band wagon. Example of Conscription

Testimonials Propagandists use this technique to associate a person with experience to endorse their product or cause by having the person with experience give the "stamp of approval."

Name Calling Technique to create fear and arouse prejudice by using negative words and sarcasm to create an unfavorable opinion or hatred against a group, beliefs, ideas or institutions they would have us denounce.

Glittering Generalities
These people employ vague, sweeping statements using language associated with values and beliefs deeply held by the audience without providing supporting information or reason.

Transfer Taking an object or symbol that people think of as having power, and associating it with the product or philosophy that the poster is trying to sell to the public. Example of the Lusitania and an Atrocity

Card Stacking Propagandists use this method to make the best case possible for their side, and the worst case for the opposing side. The propagandists will only use the facts that support his or her side, so they do not show the whole truth.

Propaganda Assignment
Two part assignment: Create your own propaganda poster. Write a written response that explains you choice.

Poster Creating your propaganda poster:
Choose a target (rival team or school or your own team or school). Choose your propaganda technique. Develop the message you are trying to display. Design your poster.

Written Response You will be writing an essay on the back of your paper where you will answer the following questions in paragraphs: 1. Who is the team/school that you are opposing? Why did you choose this topic? 2. What type of propaganda technique(s) are you using? How are you expressing these techniques? 3. How much influence do you believe propaganda had/has on a person. Explain.
