2 Activating Prior Knowledge
Good readers relate what they know to what they are reading. What do you know about imagination before we read these pieces? How have you used your imagination? What thoughts and feelings did you experience when using your imagination? Have you already read any books about imagination? 2/15/2019

3 Read Aloud: “Bears Out There,” by Joanne Ryder
Based on the title, what do you think this story is about? This story is realistic fiction about a boy who imagines the bears that live in the woods near his home. Black bears are wild animals that live in the forests of North America. They eat plants, berries, fish, and small animals. When bears find places where food is abundant, they often wear trails through the forests to those spots. 2/15/2019

4 Discussing the Read Aloud
With a partner, summarize the story. How does the boy in the story show imagination? How does imagination help the boy in the story? What did you learn about imagination? How is the theme Imagination reflected in the Read Aloud? What questions do you have about the Read Aloud or the theme? How did this story change your ideas about imagination? 5 Setting Reading Goals Good readers regularly set goals when they are reading. They are always thinking when they read. They browse what they are going to read before reading. 2/15/2019

6 Unit Opener Look at pages 196-197. Look at the illustrations.
What does the title mean? What kinds of selections may be in the unit? Look at the illustrations. Do you have any questions or are any of your questions being answered? What are you thinking about as you are reading the Unit Opener? 2/15/2019

7 Browsing the Selections
Read the titles and quickly browse each one, looking briefly at the illustrations and the text. Look at the genre Is the selection a story? a poem? expository text, such as an article? Complete Inquiry Journal page 55. 2/15/2019

8 Unit Investigations Suggested Activities:
Explore objects with senses other than sight. Share theme-related stories, articles, and poems. Visit a museum or art gallery to review and discuss works of imagination. Discuss how imagination can be deceptive. Interview family members about imagination. 2/15/2019

9 Inquiry Journal Let’s fill out Inquiry Journal page 55.
