1 Regression of Hepatic Fibrosis After Intestinal Transplantation in Total Parenteral Nutrition Liver Disease  M. Isabel Fiel, Bernhard Sauter, Hai–Shan Wu, Gonzalo Rodriguez–Laiz, Gabriel Gondolesi, Kishore Iyer, Thomas D. 2 Figure 1 Serial liver biopsy specimens of patient 4 (Masson trichrome stain, original magnification, 100×). (A) Representative portal area with fibrosis and short fibrous septa (arrows) and mild perivenular fibrosis (arrowheads) 1.5 months pre-IT. (B) At the time of IT, the portal area now is expanded markedly by fibrosis with elongated fibrous septa (arrows) and marked centrilobular fibrosis (arrowheads). (C) A portal area showing overall significant improvement in fibrosis (arrow), but to a lesser extent in the centrilobular area (arrowheads) 10 months post-IT. 3 Figure 2 Serial liver biopsy specimens of patient 3. The left panel shows a Sirius red stain photomicrograph with the corresponding digital image used for image analysis in the right panel (original magnification, 100×). The red color in the left panels represents fibrosis and the green color in the right panels represents the percentage of fibrosis as quantitated digitally. (A) Representative portal tract with mild fibrosis 4.5 months pre-IT. (B) At the time of IT, the portal area shows significant increase in fibrosis as evidenced by the larger amounts of red and green color. (C) Twelve months post-IT, the portal area shows a dramatic decrease in fibrosis as evidenced by the appreciably less red and green colors as opposed to B; also note that these are less prominent than pre-IT (A). 4 Figure 3 Regression of portal and centrilobular fibrosis. (A) Quadratic fit of all sequential biopsy specimens. Hatched lines represent portal fibrosis and solid lines represent centrilobular fibrosis. Vertical axis represents percentage of fibrosis as measured by image analysis and the horizontal axis represents the length of time of the peri-IT period. (B) Slope lines for each quadratic fit representing regression of fibrosis. Hatched lines represent portal fibrosis and solid lines represent centrilobular fibrosis. Vertical axis represents the derivative of the fibrosis area percentage and the horizontal axis represents the length of time of the peri-IT period.
