Review of Period 1 Team Formal Reports
Terry A. Ring Chemical Engineering University of Utah
2
Formal Report Abstracts Not Written Well Project Objectives
Experimental Procedures and Equipment Summarize Findings Relevant to Objectives Any important unexpected discoveries Reasonable Conclusions Thoughtful recommendations
3
Introduction On the Whole These Were Pretty Well Done
More References would be good. Do References Correctly Formal Report – References are End Notes not Foot Notes Either Seader, Henley and Roper, 2011 Seader, et. al.1
4
Apparatus and Procedure
On the Whole These Were Pretty Well Done Some Missing Equipment Schematic Diagrams Some with Diagram but without descriptive text Table of Experimental Test Parameters Note replicates of experiments for error analysis
5
Results and Discussion
Needs special efforts in Future Writing Improvements In Most Cases Text Too Short Explain what is to be understood from Figures and Tables Engineering Calculation Errors Some Wrong Equations Used Error Analysis Mostly done incorrectly
6
Conclusions On the Whole These Were Pretty Good
7
Logos Big Mistake Do Mass Balance or Energy Balance to:
Show losses in system Show accuracy of your experimental method Give the reader a belief that you know what you are talking about
8
Figures and Tables and Numbers in Text
Remember to put error bars on Data Points in Figures Lines should be reserved for plotting an equation Best Fit Theory for comparison Tables should be complete A table of heat transfer coefficient data should have the Reynolds numbers associated with them not just expt 1, 2 The Table should be a summary not just clip out from Excel Table Legends and Figure Legends Give conditions under which data was taken Remember to put errors on values in Tables and Error Bars on Data in Figures Numbers in Text have units and should have error estimates
9
Error Analysis Serious Deficiencies in Error Analysis Performed
Each Data Point on a Graph needs an Error Bar Each Value in a Table needs Error Associated with it Each number in Text needs a confidence interval If you can not tell me how good your numbers are, I do not believe them! That is not a good starting point for your grade.

Team Debriefing What should the team have done better in Lab 1?
How Can the Instructors/Lab Manager/Lab Assistant/TA Help you Better?
