Why Do We Need Geography?
We use geography every day whether we realize it or not. “How do you get to Kildonan Place?” GPS… “What kind of clothes should I take with me to France in May??” “Why aren’t there more bike paths?” “Where do we get gasoline from?” What time is it in Vancouver if it is noon here? (Time Zones)

Is Geography just looking at maps??
NO!!! Today we will learn what geography is all about.

What is Geography? Colouring and labeling maps and using globes
Memorizing the names and locations of places Knowing landforms, the vegetation, and the climates and soils of the world Learn and remember resources and products and be able to match them to places where they are found.

Also helps us to understand why people live where they do.
Learning about resources and products can help us to understand why industries develop in certain cities. Also helps us to understand why people live where they do. Why do you live in Winnipeg, Vancouver or Toronto?

Where will geography take you?
Direction - help you find your way on a map or in the real world Travel – use knowledge of geography to take a trip and know what to pack News – geography makes the news everyday! (Hurricanes, tornadoes, health alerts (e-coli), immigration.. etc..)

Geography and Technology
GIS = Global Information System A system designed to help geographers (those that study ppl and their environments) visualize, question, analyze, interpret, and understand data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts.

Why use GIS? GIS allows us to not only map out where things are, but also to describe the attributes of the item we are mapping For example: Using GIS you located Mount Logan in the Yukon Territory and describe its height, girth, age and other attributes It can also be used in crime fighting!
