Transition into Year 1 Parent meeting

Transition into Year 1 We are encouraging the children to be more independent in organising themselves. At the end of day we ask the children to get their own things ready to go home water bottles, book bags etc. Please encourage your child to take responsibility for their own belongings. Each child has a locker which they keep their belongings in. These will be emptied termly.

Uniform and PE kit Children should come into school in uniform on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. All children should wear school shoes, black trainers are acceptable but this will be changing in the future. PE kits in school on Wednesday for PE lesson. Come into school wearing PE on Friday ready for Fun Friday. Children need to make sure they bring their book bag or a bag with their reading book and record each day. Water bottles Name everything please!

Homework expectations
Weekly spellings from RWI groups (5 or 10), go out on Friday, tested the following Friday. Weekly Maths stuck into homework books, linked to learning from that week. If this is not completed children will attend homework club on a Friday lunchtime. Topic half termly, to be completed over the holiday. Reading – should be done 4x a week, otherwise children will be in homework club on a Friday lunchtime. Books can be changed in the reading corridor at 3.15pm daily. Newsletter with information comes out every half term.

Phonics Screening Check?
Children in Year 1 throughout the country will be taking part in a phonics screening check during June. As the name suggests it is a check, not a formal test. It is designed to confirm whether each child has learnt sufficient phonic decoding and blending skills to the appropriate and expected standard.

What happens in the Phonics Screening Check?
The check contains 40 words. Each child will sit one to one and read each word to a teacher. The children are encouraged to use their sounding out and blending skills to help them to read each word. The list of words contains a combination of 20 real words and 20 pseudo words (nonsense or alien words).

How can I help my child at home?
If they are struggling to decode a word, help them by encouraging them to say each sound in the word. Blend the sounds by pointing to each letter, e.g. /c/ in cat, or the letter group, e.g. /ng/ in sing. Use sound buttons. Next move your finger under the word as you say it. Discuss the meaning of word if you child does not know what they have read. Other strategies – use fingers or hands to sound out

How can I help my child at home?
There are a range of free websites and apps that you can use at home with your child.

Free School Meals Registering for free school meals can benefit your child and the school. Your child could be entitled to: - £1300 worth of extra support and opportunities as well as Free uniform Free school meals, worth up to £400 per year. Reasons for registering Your child will have access to a varied menu, providing nutritious food and it represents a saving of about £400 per year. In addition the school receives an extra payment from the government, based on its numbers

How do I know if I qualify?
Your child might be able to get free school meals if you get any of the following: Income support Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance Income-related Employment and Support Allowance Support under VI of the immigration and Asylum Act 1999 The guaranteed element of Pension Credit Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190) Working Tax credit run-on – paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit Universal Credit
