Animal Habitats
2
Rivers Found everywhere on every continent Freshwater Usually flows into larger body of water Many types of wildlife makes their homes near rivers End of the river called a mouth Longest river on Earth: Nile River Synonym for river: creek, brook, rill
3
Oceans Covers more than 70% of Earth’s surface 97% of Earth’s water is found in oceans and seas Seas are salty bodies of water found within oceans There are 5 oceans Home to many types of marine plants and animals Marine biome is the largest biome in the world Oceans contain the greatest diversity of life on Earth
4
Rainforest Tall, dense jungle Receives a large amount of yearly rainfall Very hot, humid Plants and animals adapt to this environment Tropical Home to many types of animals: monkeys, frogs, snakes, birds Two types of rainforests: temperate and tropical
5
Deserts Barren area Very little rainfall Hostile environment for plants and animals Found on every continent Usually looks barren Desserts are called “drylands” Hottest desert in the world: Sahara Desert in Africa Coldest desert in the world: Gobi Desert in Asia and the desert in Antarctica
6
Woodlands Low-density forest Allows plenty of sunlight Has lots of shrubs, herbaceous plants, and grasses Animals include: raccoons, possums, chipmunks, owls Limited shade Trees are the dominant plant form
7
Tundra Climate is cold and windy Little to no trees Snow covered for most of the year Coldest biome Found in the northern and southern hemispheres- Arctic regions Permafrost
8
Which habitat is considered barren?
Which habitat has raccoons, chipmunks, and owls? Which habitat receives a large amount of rainfall? Compare/Contrast river and oceans. Compare/Contrast rainforests and tundras. Which area would you like to live near? Why? Explain why deserts would be a hostile environment for plants and animals? Plants and animals adapt to this environment. What does adapt mean? 97% of Earth’s water is found here? What is the longest river on Earth?
