II. Economic Indicators of Development
A) Gross Domestic Product Per Capita 1) Value of the goods and services produced in a country in one year. __________ (DIVIDED BY)___________________________ Population of the country US – GDP/capita = $41,600 (2005) Mali – GDP/capita = $809 (2005) *France – GDP/capita = 30,678 but it has a higher HDI than the US because of other indicators

A) Education and Literacy MDC’s -Average 10+ years in school -Much smaller class size -Publish more books, newspapers and magazines per person -Dominate scientific and nonfiction publishing worldwide -Literacy rate +95% Primary Classroom - France

LDC’s -Average 3 or fewer years of school
-Class sizes are twice as large as MDC’s -Often have to learn from books published in a different language than their own (English, German, French, etc.) -Literacy rate many times -33% Primary Classroom Mauritania, Africa
