Graphing Linear Functions
Algebra I Unit 4
2
Graphing on the Coordinate Plane
The coordinate plane is formed by a horizontal number line, called the x-axis, and a vertical number line, called the y-axis. The two axes intersect at a point called the origin.
3
Graphing on the Coordinate Plane
You can locate any point on the coordinate plane by an ordered pair of numbers (x, y), called the coordinates. To plot a point, start at the origin and count along the x axis until you reach the x-coordinate (right for positive numbers or left for negative). Then count up or down the number of the y-coordinate (up for positive, down for negative.)
4
Graphing on the Coordinate Plane
The coordinate plane is divided into four sections called quadrants. Points in Quadrant I have positive x and positive y coordinates. Points in Quadrant II have negative x but positive y coordinates. Points in Quadrant III have negative x and negative y coordinates. Points in Quadrant IV have positive x but negative y coordinates.

Graphing on the Coordinate Plane
Every straight line can be represented by an equation, called a linear equation. The coordinates of every point on the line will solve the equation if you substitute them in the equation for x and y.
