A recipe calls for ¾ cup of regular sugar and 2/3 cup of brown sugar. How much sugar is there altogether? We can’t add two fractions together when the denominators are different. So, we can use a fun trick called the “Butterfly Method” to help us! Let’s go to the next slide to try it out…

37 Let’s try it with mixed numbers! We will need to use improper fractions

40 Day 2

41 What are we doing today? Agenda:
Least Common Denominator (4 Square Method for adding fractions) 2. Adding Fractions & Mixed Numbers

42 Least Common Denominator Method
You cannot add or subtract fractions if the denominators are different numbers. Step 1: List the first few multiples of the two denominators Step 2: Find the least common denominator Step 3: Use this to make equivalent fractions Step 4: Then add the numerators but keep the same denominator

43

44 Least Common Denominator Method – mixed numbers
2 ¼ + 1 ½ Add the whole number parts first, save that answer for later. For the Fraction Parts: List the first few multiples of the two denominators Find the least common denominator Use this to make equivalent fractions Then add the numerators but keep the same denominator Simplify your fraction and then add it back to the whole numbers from the beginning!

45 You cannot add or subtract fractions if the denominators are different numbers. Step 1: List the first few multiples of the two denominators Step 2: Find the least common denominator Step 3: Use this to make equivalent fractions Step 4: Then add the numerators but keep the same denominator

56 USA TEST PREP Math Weekly Assignment
You have a weekly assignment in USA Test Prep You can try the assignment up to 3 times Due by FRIDAY!

57 The Butterfly Method A recipe calls for ¾ cup of regular sugar and 2/3 cup of brown sugar. How much sugar is there altogether?

58 Adding Unlike Fractions
Monday A recipe calls for ¾ cup of regular sugar and 2/3 cup of brown sugar. How much sugar is there altogether? You cannot add or subtract fractions if the denominators are different numbers. Step 1: Find the least common denominator Step 2: Use this to make equivalent fractions Step 3: Then add the numerators but keep the same denominator Denominators are like socks! We want them to match up before we combine them.

59 Modeled Examples – Mixed Numbers
Monday You cannot add or subtract fractions if the denominators are different numbers. Step 1: Find the least common denominator of the fractions Step 2: Use this to make equivalent fractions Step 3: Then Add the numerators but keep the same denominator. Add the whole numbers! Simplify Your Answers!

60 Independent Practice 1. Find the Least Common Denominator between _____ and _____. 2. Rewrite equivalent fractions 3. Subtract numerators. 4. Simplify
