Unit Two, Day 9 Plants
2
Opener 15 minutes In groups at your table-
Discuss the cladogram of the divergence of lice that you made or the information that you read about Information that describes the speciation of lice What do we know? When did chimps, gorillas and humans diverge? How many different types of louse are there for each of the primates above? What other dates are important?
3
Agenda Divergence of Lice Plants
4
New Learning Targets I can analyze the data provided by a phylogenetic tree or cladogram to determine the evolutionary history of the organisms described in the diagram In short: I can read cladograms I can use a data set to create a cladogram that represents a reasonable hypothesis about the evolutionary history of a group of related organisms In short: I can make a cladogram
5
So what happened to the louse?
Groups Isolated within Species (sympatric or allopatric) Evolution So what happened to the louse? Species A Species B Reproductive barrier
7
Primate speciation occurs, this means habitat isolation for the lice
Body Lice Head Lice 170,000 YA clothing Loss of Hair Pubic Lice 3.3 MYA Colonization of Gorilla Lice Chimp Lice Human Lice Gorilla Lice 6 MYA Primate speciation occurs, this means habitat isolation for the lice Human Lice Chimp Lice 12 MYA
8
Old Learning Targets I can explain how artificial selection works as a mechanism for evolution I can determine if a set of data shows statistically significant variation using a Chi-Squared analysis
9
Plants
10
Plant Hairs You need to now count the number of trichomes on each plant and record down the number Keep careful record of what plant has what “hairyness”
11
Share out!
12
Histogram in your packet and notebook
Set up axes: X-ranges from data table Y-number of plants in range Create a histogram—one bar for each range Helps predict how things will shift in a population: this is evolution!
13
Culling What was our cut off last time?
We need to “weed” out the plants that don’t fit in the spectrum Cut at the base carefully
14
Lab Report To determine if evolution has occurred!
