1 2018 1L Mock Trial Competition Presented by:
Floyd, Pflueger, and Ringer Northwest Trial Attorneys Competition Chairs: Seth Brickey, Morgan Cartwright, Sarah Hopkins, Laura Robinett-Barnes Competition Committee: Kayvon Behroozian, Jackson Marchant, Jack W. Miller

2 Overview You and a partner argue a civil case
You and your partner will prepare opening statements, direct & cross examinations, and closing arguments. You will argue before a panel of 2-5 practicing attorneys at least twice. You will prepare and present cases for both the plaintiff and the defense.

3 Why Compete in 1L Mock? It’s fun! Good introduction to trial advocacy.
Practice lawyering skills useful outside of the trial context F is for Friends who do stuff together Earn points for MCHB membership Much easier to try out for National Teams (the holy grail of moot court/mock trial joy) Looks great on a resume.

4 Registration Registration will open today after this session, and will remain open until Monday, October 29th To register, fill out the google form today, or and we will send you the link. There will be a small registration fee, amount TBA. It will not be more than $25/team.

5 The Problem Problem will be released by October 22 (Monday)
The complete rules of the competition, along with a sample judge’s ballot and a list of permissible objections, will be ed to you along with the problem. These materials (except for the problem) are also available on the MCHB website.

6 The Format Opening Statements (Plaintiff first, then Defense)
Plaintiff Case (2 witnesses) Direct Cross Defense Case (2 witnesses) Closing Arguments (Plaintiff first, then Defense) Plaintiff Rebuttal

7 Competition Outline 11/5 & 11/6: Preliminary rounds.
11/6: Preliminary round scores released; advancing teams announced. 11/7: Quarterfinal rounds. 11/8: Semifinal rounds. 11/13: Final Rounds and official “Everyone Worked So Hard, Let’s Eat Cheese” ceremony

8 Training MCHB will host three trainings:
How to give a compelling opening or closing statement— 10/22 (Monday) How to direct and cross examine witnesses— 10/24 (Wednesday) How to maintain professionalism, interact with judges, and report problems to MCHB— 10/31 (two weeks from today) At least one member of each team MUST attend each training! We will be taking roll.

9 Awards Champion, Finalist, and Semifinalist Teams from each bracket.
Speaker awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Best Oral Advocate. Winners of Speaker awards receive an invite to join MCHB at the end of the year. Everyone is a winner!!!

10 What should I do now? Find a partner. Find two witnesses and a bailiff
