Guiding Principles NTT appointments should
serve the core research and teaching mission of the University by attracting the most accomplished and highest quality faculty be benefits eligible whenever possible be full-time whenever possible provide job security to greatest extent possible provide a career path with opportunities for advancement have clear and transparent processes of appointment, evaluation, reappointment or termination have clear job definitions, conditions of employment and performance expectations have clear statements about the role of NTT faculty in governance at all levels enjoy the protection of academic freedom in performance of teaching and research have appropriate pay and opportunity for merit pay increases

NTT Teaching Track Common set of titles defined centrally and generally used across the academic schools Career track with assistant, associate, and full ranks full-time multi-year or rolling appointments Contingent faculty positions part-time continuing positions full-time but of limited duration Limited number of unique titles when justified

NTT Titles in the Professional Schools (Architecture, Business, Music)
Professional schools across the nation have their own, recognizable series of NTT titles that frequently differ from those in the sciences and humanities. Deans of the Professional schools should have the flexibility to develop titles appropriate to their culture The professional schools should develop their own series of NTT titles, which they will endeavor to use as consistently as possible within their School

Next Steps Develop recommendations with specific language for revising Rice Policies 201 (“Faculty Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure”) and 327 (“Research Faculty”), in consultation with relevant offices, and present it to the Provost and Faculty Senate. Identify other relevant Rice policies and suggest revisions. Develop a list of “Best Practices”. Develop a list of administrative NTT issues.
